Web Writing and Me!
My experiences with writing for the web are few, but actually occured very recently. For the first 6 weeks of this past summer I had an internship at WQLN, the local PBS station at home. As a major part of my internship I assisted in organizing a new club called Ethnic Erie which had the goal of becoming a common resource for all of the diverse ethnic groups in the Erie area. The Web site for this club had already been set up, but was very scant and had little information of substance in it. It became my job to fill the site with information. I wrote descriptions of all of the cultural organizations and clubs in the area (after researching them of course) and also made a listing of various ethnic restaurants and shopping centers people could go to if they were looking for a specific type of food. It was a very interesting project to say the least. However, I didn't have a part in actually posting any of the writing onto the web. I simply wrote it and sent it over to my boss who posted it.
As a consumer of Web writing, I think it's much more interesting to read articles and information with a bit of personality in them. I find it difficult reading straight news articles and stories on a screen. I'd rather read a narrative or someone's opinion on a certain topic. I don't have a problem reading news stories in print, but for some reason they don't hold my interest as well online, possibly because there is e-mail and aim (both of which will put me in contact with friends who obviously have personality behind their writing) just a click away. I have found the web to be very useful when gathering information for current events, or researching topics that have just established themselves over the past few years. The information on the web is able to update itself so quickly that, if you know you're at a legit site, I think you can find some of the best information by using the internet.
Writing for the web may not play directly into my major at first glance, as I am a Theatre major, but looking down the road I realize how useful this knowledge will be. If I ever end up working for a community theatre, or even open my own theatre at some point, I will be able to establish a working Web site for the organization which will definitley help with publicity immensely. Also, it is a fantastic way to learn to post my resume so that any director in the world can see it. I can see the web as opening up a lot of opportunities for me that I may not have otherwise come across were I just relying on print for information on auditions and the like.
Overall, I'm really looking forward to this class and think a lot of what I learn will prove very useful in my future endeavors, both in my major and just as an "average joe" person!
